Dog House Repair Month is the perfect reminder to give your dog’s outdoor space a little extra love. While most dogs would probably ask for an endless supply of treats before anything else, we’re pretty sure they’d also appreciate a safe, comfortable place to relax.
At Hannah Pet Hospital, we know a Pet’s health is about more than what happens during a veterinary visit. The spaces where they eat, sleep, play, and explore are all part of their overall well-being. Whether your dog has a backyard dog house, a covered patio retreat, or simply a favorite shady spot outside, taking a few minutes to refresh their space can make a big difference.
If dogs could design their dream outdoor setup, here’s what would be at the top of their wish list… or at least what we imagine they’d bark about.
“I’d Like a Roof That Doesn’t Leak, Please.”
Rain belongs outside—not inside my house.
Take a few minutes to inspect the roof for cracks, loose boards, or signs of water damage. A dry, sturdy shelter helps keep your dog comfortable when they’re enjoying time outdoors.
“Can We Replace This Bed?”
I’ve been sleeping on this bedding forever…
Fresh, clean bedding can make your dog’s favorite hangout even more inviting. Replace anything that’s worn, damp, or difficult to clean, and wash reusable bedding regularly to help keep dirt, odors, and allergens to a minimum.
Hannah Tip: If your dog spends a lot of time outdoors, consider using waterproof or water-resistant bedding designed for outdoor use. It’s easier to clean, helps keep moisture out, and can provide your pup with a dry, cozy place to rest after a day of backyard adventures.
“Less Spiders. More Squirrels.”
I don’t mind watching wildlife…I’d just rather not share my house with it.
Take a quick look inside the dog house for spider webs, insects, or other unwanted visitors. While you’re at it, clear away leaves or debris that may have collected around the outside.
“I’d Love Some Shade for My Afternoon Nap.”
Sunbathing is fun…until it gets too hot.
Position your dog’s outdoor space where it has plenty of shade and good airflow. During warmer weather, outdoor shelters can heat up quickly, so it’s important to make sure your dog always has access to cool, comfortable areas and fresh water.
Hannah Tip: On especially hot days, the coolest and safest place for your dog is often indoors with the family.
“A Safe Place to Stretch My Paws.”
Nobody likes stepping on splinters.
Inspect the inside and outside of the dog house for exposed nails, sharp edges, loose boards, or anything else that could cause an injury. Catching small issues early can help prevent bigger problems down the road.
“Fresh Water, Please!”
After all that squirrel watching, I’m thirsty.
If your dog spends time outside, make sure fresh, clean water is always available. Check it throughout the day, especially during the summer months, and refill it often to help your pup stay hydrated.
“Maybe a New Toy Wouldn’t Hurt…”
A little upgrade never hurt anyone.
Whether it’s a favorite toy, a fresh blanket, or simply giving the space a good cleaning, small touches can make your dog’s outdoor area feel even more welcoming.
Every Dog Deserves a Place to Feel Safe
Our dogs may not be able to hand us a renovation checklist, but they do count on us to create spaces where they can feel safe, comfortable, and cared for.
At Hannah Pet Hospital, we believe caring for your Pet goes beyond routine veterinary visits. Creating a safe environment, staying on top of preventive care, and paying attention to the little things all play an important role in helping your Pet live a healthier, happier life.
This Dog House Repair Month, take a few minutes to give your pup’s outdoor space a refresh. We think they’d give it five paws out of five.
