Start Here

Summer is road trip season, and for many Pet Parents, that means bringing their four-legged family members along for the adventure. Whether you’re heading to the beach, the mountains, or visiting family, a little preparation can help make the trip safer and more enjoyable for everyone.

Pack the Essentials

Before you hit the road, make sure your Pet has everything they might need during the trip. A few important items to bring include:

Food and treats

Fresh water and a portable bowl

Leash and harness

Waste bags

Any medications your Pet takes regularly

A copy of your Pet’s medical records and medication information, especially if you’re traveling far from home.

A favorite toy, blanket, or bed for comfort

Having familiar items nearby can help reduce stress and make your Pet feel more at ease in a new environment.

Prioritize Safety in the Car

Just like people, Pets should be properly secured while traveling. A crash-tested carrier, secured crate, or pet seat belt can help keep everyone safer and reduce distractions for the driver.

Never allow Pets to ride in the front seat or with their heads hanging out of the window. While it may look fun, debris and insects can cause injury.

Plan for Plenty of Breaks

Long car rides can be tiring for Pets. Plan regular stops every few hours so your Pet can stretch their legs, use the restroom, and have a drink of water.

These breaks can also help reduce anxiety and make the trip more comfortable overall.

Be Mindful of Summer Heat

One of the biggest dangers during summer travel is heat. Temperatures inside a parked vehicle can rise quickly, even on mild days.

Never leave your Pet unattended in a vehicle, even for a few minutes.

When exploring new destinations, check pavement temperatures before walks and always bring water to help your Pet stay hydrated. A good rule of thumb is the seven-second test: place the back of your hand on the pavement for seven seconds. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your Pet’s paws.

Research Pet-Friendly Stops

Before you leave, look into pet-friendly hotels, parks, restaurants, and attractions along your route. Knowing where your Pet is welcome can help eliminate stress and make the trip more enjoyable for everyone.

Before You Hit the Road

If you’re planning a trip with your Pet this summer, make sure they’re up to date on their preventive care and ready for the adventure ahead. Whether you have questions about travel, medications, or your Pet’s overall health, the Hannah Team is here to help.

At Hannah, we’re proud to partner with Pet Parents through every stage of their Pet’s life, from everyday wellness visits to summer road trips and new adventures.

From all of us at Hannah Pet Hospital, we hope you and your Pet have a safe, fun, and memorable summer on the road.

Summer is road trip season, and for many Pet Parents, that means bringing their four-legged family members along for the adventure.
